Condi Rice and Bella Abzug

James Wolcott writes:

[Joe Lieberman] propped himself up to drone his support for the nomination of Condi Rice as Secretary of Clueless, arguing that we should celebrate the breakthrough confirmation of an African-American woman for such a powerful post, even though her being African-American and a woman were irrelevant to her qualifications. Then why bring it up? I suppose it's progress of a sort when a duplicitous incompetent can be promoted regardless of race or gender--I can hear Don King jubilating, "Only in America!"--but it ought to make for a muted celebration.

This reminds me of my favorite Bella Abzug quote, ""Our struggle today is not to have a female Einstein get appointed as an assistant professor. It is for a woman schlemiel to get as quickly promoted as a male schlemiel."

It's too early to pronounce the struggle won, but I guess we're making progress by the Abzug Standard.

Yeah, it was bad enough that we had HIM for 4 more years, but now we have to endure HER stupidity for 4 years. *sigh*
